NIÑO DEL LUGAR

In niño del lugar, Pedro Trueba Ramírez utilizes symbols of consumerism and culture to locate himself, and his practice, within our contemporary moment. Straddling a cultural divide bridged by imagery and material goods, Trueba Ramírez examines tokens of globalization and their influence on perceived value. Employing visual lexicons of consumer and media culture, niño del lugar explores the perhaps inescapable nature of homogenization within a universalized society. The oversaturation of consumerist messaging makes symbols less a beacon for our attention and more a texture of everyday life, exemplified even in domestic spaces.

From soccer teams to venerated objects, this exhibition questions the economic structures around devotion and self-determination. Here, the artist brings into light capitalism’s entanglement in every domain, even the transcendent. In niño del lugar, Trueba Ramírez explores the self-immolating nature of popular Mexican culture and the baggage of colonization strapped to celebrated objects that, despite being popularized in other countries, have become indissolubly Mexican.
